Arles : Jean-Marie Périer, Jazz Power, to Sept. 26th.

At the time of the laws of racial segregation in the United States, in force until 1964, and the difficult process of decolonization begun by France, rare are the publications of the French press which put in cover African-Americans. So the tone is given from the first issue of Jazz Magazine in December 1954. From the outset, the young team of the magazine became the apostle of musical borrowing and cultural exchanges, witnessing ardently the struggles for civil rights in America, as well as the discrimination suffered by African Americans on both sides of the Atlantic. The monthly soon became the field of experimentation and advocacy for the two editors-in-chief, Frank Ténot and Daniel Filipacchi, fiery and ambitious friends fascinated by jazz and African-American counter-culture. Surrounded by enthusiasts, they actively participate in the construction of «legends» in France. For two decades, they legitimized jazz as a cultural practice, consecrated it and revealed its eminently political dimension. The Photographer Jean-Marie Périer was an ongoing contributor to the magazine during the whole period. A number of work prints can be seen in the exhibition at the Rencontres d'Arles. Exhibition curated by Clara Bastid and Marie Robert
