Stéphane Belzère (born Stéphane Kreienbühl on November 6, 1963, France) is a Franco-Swiss painter known for his unique and thought-provoking works. He is the son of painters Jürg Kreienbühl and Suzanne Lopata, and spent his childhood in Switzerland. Belzère currently splits his time between Basel and Paris, where his studio is located.
Belzère graduated from the Beaux-Arts de Paris in 1990. His early works were influenced by his father’s realism, and often were inspired by scenes of nature.
From 1991 to 1994, Belzère spent significant time in Berlin, capturing the urban landscape and historical remnants of the city after the fall of the Berlin Wall. In 1995, he began work on a series of paintings at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris, focusing on animal brains and organs preserved in formalin jars. This series, known as "Les bocaux anatomiques," explored themes of flesh, beauty, and repulsion.
Belzère's fascination with transparency and sedimentation led to his "Long Paintings" series, which depicted the layering of organic materials in anatomical jars.
In 2003, Belzère won a competition to design stained glass windows for the Rodez Cathedral. His work combined religious iconography with biological imagery, reflecting the mystery of life and its perpetual renewal.
Belzère continues to explore various themes and techniques in his art, including a series of watercolors called "Diaquarelles," based on old family and advertising slides. His work remains a blend of figuration and abstraction, often evoking both real and imagined landscapes.
His works have been shown in numerous museum exhibitions, most recently at the Strasbourg Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art; they have further been the subject of several publications and are within several important public and private collections (see C.V.).
