"I was tempted to make photographic portraits of trees. None have responded to the feeling they inspire me. Only Ovid's poetry, which makes of certain trees the serene metamorphoses of tragic lovers, or the painting of Titian, Claude, Fragonard, which makes them winged metaphors of nymphs or fairies, is up to from what I know about them. So I fell back on the close-up, and I discovered that photography could at least fix what we do not look at most often while passing by and distractedly, the leather of the trees. On their trunk, support of rich and lively material, is also revealed the generous art of Nature, in his genius of burinist and painter on wood."
