"Photo LA 2020, stand H03"
from Thursday, January 30, 2020 to Sunday, February 2, 2020
The Barker Hangar, Santa Monica
The stand will focus on narrative photography with five major artists:
Mona Kuhn (USA, b. 1969): will be on view works from her latest series “She Disappeared into Complete Silence”. Shot in a glass house in the Arizona desert, the nude model blends in the architectural lines of the house. A work of Kuhn is currently shown at the Getty Museum in the “Unseen” exhibition. Kuhn will do a book signing on the stand.
Paolo Ventura (Italy, b.1968): has been referred to as one of the art scene’s most interesting storytellers with his timeless and charmingly enigmatic works. The current exhibition at the gallery, “An Unseen World”, spans works made over the last decade and includes the debut of new works. It has been widely applauded by the Press.
Anja Niemi (Norway, b.1976): Although she examines identity and the self, she looks far beyond herself. Her visual world suggests the most adventurous corners of contemporary fashion photography. 2019 has been a turning point in her career, with the publication of a monography at Thames & Hudson (In Character) and a solo exhibition at Fotografiska.
Scarlett Hooft Graafland (Dutch, b.1973): after brilliant studies (a BFA at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and a MFA at Parson’s School of Design, New York), she spent the following years travelling to remote places where she choreographed performances with local people. Her surreal photographs have been shown in numerous exhibitions worldwide. Galerie XII Los Angeles will present her first solo exhibition in the USA in April 2020.
Quentin Shih (China, 1975): his career begins in the 2000s when he settles in Beijing and chooses to become a Fashion Photographer. In 2007, Esquire nominates him as “Photographer of the Year”. The following year, Dior asks him to shoot for the 60th anniversary of the company. His series “Shanghai Dreamers” is seen worldwide. The pieces from “Familiars” that will be on Galerie XII’s stand explore the complex relationship each of us has with our memories. -
